Regional talk.

Meme via rikibeth

1. A body of water, smaller than a river, contained within relatively narrow banks?

Bayou or ditch at home. In most of my childhood reading, stream or brook.

2. What the thing you push around the grocery store is called?

Grocery cart or shopping cart.

3. A metal container to carry a meal in?

4. The thing that you cook bacon and eggs in?

Skillet. Grill. Frying pan.
Unless I'm using one of those microwave tray thingies, with a bunch of paper towels.

5. The piece of furniture that seats three people?

Sofa, couch, LazyBoy.

6. The device on the outside of the house that carries rain off the roof?

7. The covered area outside a house where people sit in the evening?

8. Carbonated, sweetened, non-alcoholic beverages?

Soft drink. Soda. Regionally, may be replaced with brand name as generic, as in: "What kind of Pepsi would you like?" (I, personally, detest Pepsi, so I'll have iced tea.)

9. A flat, round breakfast food served with syrup?

10. A long sandwich designed to be a whole meal in itself?

Po'boy, especially if it contains seafood. Hoagie. Sub.

11. The piece of clothing worn by men at the beach?

Bathing suit or Bathing trunks.

12. Shoes worn for sports?

Tennis shoes. Sneakers. Gym shoes. Brand-name-as-generic (e.g., Nikes).

13. Putting a room in order?

14. A flying insect that glows in the dark?

Lightening bug. Not that I ever saw any until I moved to Pittsburgh.

16. The children's playground equipment where one kid sits on one side and goes up while the other sits on the other side and goes down?

17. How do you eat your pizza?

Depends. Sometimes, I hold it in my hand and bite out of it. If it's from Star, I use a knife and fork. If I'm alone with the shades drawn, I eat the toppings first, then the cheese, then the crust.

18. What's it called when private citizens put up signs and sell their used stuff?

Garage sale, yard sale. A great idea I'm usually too lazy to try.

19. What's the evening meal?

Dinner. Sometimes supper, if speaking to older neighbors from Mississippi.

20. The thing under a house where the furnace and perhaps a rec room are?

Ew. Roaches live there. Crawl space. Furnace? When I live in a place exempted from federal fuel saving laws so they can run air conditioning?

21. What do you call the thing that you can get water out of to drink in public places?

Water fountain.
