I'll miss Julia

I can't remember my first cooking lesson. My mother called instructions to me through the door to the bath (where she was enjoying a soak). What I can remember was how fantastic it was to know that, once one had mastered a technique, one could use it to create many different tasting meals.

Julia Child's cookbooks are written that way. She began with a meticulous set of instructions -- not unlike the lab instructions in chemistry lab. After the one receipe is completed, she lists variations (sub X, remove Y) using the same receipe. How wonderful to learn only one receipe and have mastered 5 or more!

When I first saw her kitchen, painstakingly reassembled in the Smithsonian, I felt a shock of recognition. It was like my mama's kitchen from my childhood.

I'm glad she had a full life. I find she was one of my folk heros.

:o

I have got to find myself a news source that I can live with! I didn't even know she had gone. :(
